WANTED - WEATHER OBSERVERS IN NEW MEXICO!!

The Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network, better known as
CoCoRaHS, has recently expanded into New Mexico and is looking for citizen
volunteer weather observers here in the Land of Enchantment.

CoCoRaHS, based at Colorado State University and started in 1998, is a very unique,
non-profit, community based network of volunteer citizen weather observers of all
ages and backgrounds working together to measure and report precipitation amounts
(rain, hail and snow). By using low cost and self provided measurement tools and
stressing training and education and utilizing an interactive website, the aim of
CoCoRaHS is to provide the highest quality precipitation data for natural resource
education as well as research applications, because, as we say Aevery drop counts@.
This effort in New Mexico is especially important given the importance of water in our
everyday lives.

CoCoRaHS, in addition to New Mexico, is currently up and operating in Alaska,
Colorado, the District of Columbia, Indiana, Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, Missouri,
Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee,
Virginia, Wisconsin as well as Wyoming.

This is truly a fun, educational community based project. Everyone can help - young
and old and in between. So, who can be involved?? Here are the basic requirements
for being a CoCoRaHS weather observer...

(1) Have access to the internet and the ability to browse the CoCoRaHS web site,
(which is where you will   enter your daily precipitation data) although reports by mail
are perfectly welcome.
(2) Have an official CoCoRaHS rain gauge (we can assist you in getting one very
inexpensively)
(3) Have a good site on your property with good exposure (as tree free as possible)
where you can place the rain gauge
(4) Be willing to enter your precipitation data on a daily basis between 6-9AM through
our internet web site.

What are the benefits of being a CoCoRaHS observer? Well, we don't offer a pay
check, but one of the neat things about participating in the CoCoRaHS network is
walking away with the feeling that you are making an important contribution that helps
others. By providing your daily precipitation data, you truly help in filling in a piece of
the puzzle that affects many in your part of New Mexico in one way or another -
whether it's farmers and ranchers, National Weather Service meteorologists or
emergency management personnel.

How do you become a CoCoRaHS observer? You can go to our website (
www.
cocorahs.org) and click on the Join CoCoRaHS emblem on the upper right side of the
main website or if you have questions, you may drop a note to Susan Griffin, Regional
Coordinator for CoCoRaHS (
susan.griffin@noaa.gov).

CoCoRaHS, through Colorado State University, is supported nationally through the
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). and in New Mexico is
supported, in part, by the Office of the State Climatologist, the New Mexico State
University Water Task Force, and the New Mexico Floodplain Managers Association
(NMFMA).

Do you have tickets to the Gun Show?
The All American Gun and Western Collectible Show, August 30th
& 31st, is in its 18th year this year and as such has become a
tradition in Ruidoso.  Part of the All American Festival, it is one of
a series of events and festivities surrounding the $2 million All
American Futurity, the world's richest quarter horse race, run
every Labor Day at Ruidoso Downs Race Track and Casino.

The All American Gun and Western Collectible Show is just what
the name implies, 180 tables of everything that relates to guns as
well hunting equipment, knives, cowboy gear, saddles, blankets,
spurs, western relics, Indian artifacts, jewelry, coins and much,
much more.

Cash, check or credit card is not the only acceptable exchange
for goods.  You may also trade, or sell your guns or collectable.
Many vendors are always looking for new and different items.

If you are a woman reading this, I know what you are thinking.
You are thinking this is a guy show!  You are wrong! Many women
enjoy this show and find things that interest them including
jewelry, western collectables and decoratives for the home.

The All American Gun and Western Collectable Show is produced
by Special Events Resource Group (SERG). SERG is a non-profit
501c3 New Mexico Corporation formed with the purpose of
providing funds to benefit legitimate and recognized Charities and
fund Education Scholarships for the youth of Lincoln County, NM.
Since its inception in 1999, SERG has contributed over $112,000
to Lincoln County charities. These contributions include $30,000
for Lincoln County Scholarships; $10,000 Gymnastics Boosters
Concessions; $30,000 Community Center holding account; and
$26,651 for various Lincoln County Charities.

SERG has a proven record of contributions to the community and
Lincoln County as a whole. We now maintain and promote two
events – the All American Gun and Western Collectible show and
the
Ruidoso Oktoberfest (26th annual). We continue to grow and
we are able to give more to the community. We invite you to join
us in this endeavor.

Poetry group opportunities
ARTESIA - Poetry in Motion is a group of writers who get together to read our poetry, stories and
song lyrics to the group.  We endeavor to help each other get the results we each are seeking
from our individual efforts whether that is to become published or to better understand our lives.

We always have something to share and are encouraged to do so in every meeting whether it's a
few words or a few pages, a question, a hug.  We have plans for an Open Mike, fundraisers,
special guests, writers and storytellers, and many more special events.

We meet every other Monday at the Artesia Arts Council building, located at 510 W. Main in
downtown Artesia, New Mexico. Membership is free and we have writers of all ages and
backgrounds.

Write us at the poetry club's main email,

PLAY SYNOPSIS:   The action is set in Truvy's beauty salon in Chinquapin, LA, where all the
ladies who are "anybody" come to have their hair done.  Helped by her eager new assistant,
Annelle (who is not sure whether or not she is still married) the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy
dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town's rich curmudgeon, Ouiser (I'm not crazy, I've
just been in a bad mood for 40 years); and eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee, who has a raging
sweet tooth; and the local social leader, M'Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby (the prettiest girl in
town), is about to marry a "good ole boy."  Filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic but
humorously revealing verbal collisions, the play moves toward tragedy when, in the second act,
the spunky Shelby (who is diabetic) risks pregnancy and forfeits her life.  The sudden realization
of their mortality affects the others, but also draws on the underlying strength - and love - which
give the play, and its characters, the special quality to make them truly touching, funny and
marvelously amiable company in good times and bad.
