At the May 13th City Council meeting,
approval was given to demolish the
building across the street from city hall,
known as City Hall Annex.

This building was located on the
southeast corner of Fifth Street and
Texas Avenue.  It originally was built as
the City of Artesia Fire Department
and has undergone several changes
and utilizations through the decades.

Most recently, it served as the
temporary home for the Artesia
Juvenile Project and prior to that was
the Artesia Senior Center for many
years.

Because of construction regulations
that would require "bringing the
building up to code," it was determined
to be more fiscally feasible to raze the
place and start fresh in the future.

Problems with the property included a
leaky roof, which caused water
damage to the ceilings and walls and
asbestos was found, which had to be
removed.

A pile of rubble is all that remains,
which will also soon be gone.  City
plans for the lot include temporary
parking.
